Magnitude of 6.7 earthquake hits near Indonesia’s Java island

The quake occurred about 412 kilometres south-southeast of Jakarta at 3:06 a.m. local time at a depth of 24 kilometres, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The tsunami warning was later lifted by Indonesia’s earthquake agency, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the 6.7-magnitude quake, which struck about 300km off Cilacap on the south coast of Java, at a depth of 10km.

Thousands of people in the town of Cilacap poured into the streets and ran to high ground, many gathering in mosques, witnesses told El Shinta radio.

“In Cilacap people were panicking – most of them were evacuating to higher ground,” said an agency spokesman.
